Nattland (Nachtland)
A black comedy by Marius von Mayenburg
When siblings Nicola and Philipp clear out their father’s house, they discover a seemingly harmless painting from 1920s Vienna—until they notice the signature. Suddenly, they find themselves caught in an absurd tug-of-war over money, prestige—and an inheritance that no one really wants.
Nattland is a razor-sharp, pitch-black comedy in which the past haunts the present and the truth always comes at a price. With brisk pacing, fiery dialogue, and unexpected twists, playwright Marius von Mayenburg cranks up both the laughter and the discomfort until everything fractures. Once again, Mayenburg demonstrates a masterful ability to combine dark humor with psychological precision.
Directed by Anna-Maria Lipponen, the production creates a visually rich performance where cinematic aesthetics meet incisive dialogue and absurd situational comedy.
Nattland is an explosive satire about the value of art, the darkness of history—and what we are truly willing to sacrifice to avoid facing the truth.
